Poker may be about to take a giant step in Italy, according to information from the website assopoker. According to the site, the Italian Olympic Committee has greenlighted the the Italian Poker Federation (FIGP) concerning the affiliation process.
This process would have as result the recognition of live Texas Hold'em tournaments as a sporting event. As such, it might lead to the creation of national, regional and provincial championships.
Isidoro Alampi, president of the FIGP, declined to comment on the veracity of this information. He has said, though, the following words: "it is a fight we have been waging for years."
Meanwhile, the ASI (the entity that oversees the affiliation processes to the Italian Olympic Committee) has scheduled a press conference on 23 October; some suspect the subject of the press conference will be the affiliation process of the Italian Poker Federation.
