European Parliament favors national legislation of online poker

11 September 2025

The European Union parliament, in Strasbourg, voted in favor of a report from the Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection calling for online gambling regulation at the national level and not at the European level.

The vote took place in Strasbourg and the report was accepted with 572 votes in favor, 79 against and 61 abstentions. The only items where action at the supranational level is recommended relates to policies on anti-money laundering, lists of self-excluding players and consumer protection.

This European parliament vote goes against the intentions of the European Commission, which aims to create a common platform for online gambling legislation in Europe.

A draft law on online gambling will only go forward when both the Parliament and the Commission are in agreement, which for now seems unlikely.
