Quentin Lecomte has just won the Unibet Open in Cannes; the french player was awarded the €100,000 first prize.
The Unibet Open tournaments have a €1,650 buy-in, and this buy-in was paid for 313 players in Cannes. Only the 9 finalists arrived at the third and final day:
Seat 1 : Thierry Morel - 1,181,000
Seat 2 : Linus Hjulström - 759,000
Seat 3 : Linas Laurinenas - 346,000
Seat 4 : Paul Valkenburg - 613,000
Seat 5 : Quentin Lecomte - 498,000
Seat 6 : Joao Silva - 576,000
Seat 7 : Joni Salo - 744,000
Seat 8 : Paul Tedeschi - 1,110,000
Seat 9 : Dmitry Varlamov - 431,000
The highlight of this final table was the presence of the Russian Dmitry Varlamov, winner of the Unibet Open Troy in June - Varlamov was the best among 242 players and received €80,186. Yesterday Varlamov repeated his presence at the final table, but he was the first player out, being eliminated in the very first hand of the final table.
The next one out was the Portuguese João "Megas" Silva. The Portuguese player was eliminated by Thierry Morel's aces, and he had to settle for 8th place. After Silva's departure the action slowed significantly, and it took almost 3 hours for the next player to be eliminated. This time it was Paul Valkenburg who had to go home, losing with Kd-Qs to Hjulström's Ac-Jc, who won the pot when the river brought an As.
After Valkenburg's departure, Joni Salo and Thierry Morel were eliminated right after. Salo, Finnish, lost at the hands of Tedeschi; Morel was eliminated by Hjulström.
Even with the second largest stack among the 4 finalists, Tedeschi didn't manage to go further than 4th place - he went against the chip leader, Hjulström. Tedeschi's Ah-Qd didn't hold up against Hjulström's 9d-9c.
The Swede was going for the victory and was also responsible for Laurinenas's elimination. The Lithuanian player went all-in from the small blind with As-5d, but he was dominated by Hjulström's Ah-7h.
Time for the heads-up - Hjulström had 4.100.000 chips and Lecomte 1.900.000.
Still, before the final match, there was the dinner break.
It took almost three hours for the champion to emerge. Despiste Hjulström bigger stack, Lecomte managed to turn the situation in his favor and won the tournament with this hand:
Hjulström went all-in from the button and Lecomte called. Hjulström showed Ac-Ks and Lecomte 7h-7s. When the board came 9d-5s-9c-7d-6h that was it - Lecomte was the champion.
