Brent Beckley, one of the founders of Absolute Poker was sentenced to 14 Months in prison after declaring guilty of violating the UIGEA and committing wire fraud and money laundering. The 32 years old was responsible for the processing of the room’s payments since 2003.
Present before Judge Lewis Kaplan, Beckley said: “I cheated myself by thinking that what I was doing was normal.” Despite the fact that Beckley did not have any criminal records and declare himself guilty, judge Kaplan thought he deserved time in jail for his actions: “The sentence has to state clearly that USA government does not joke around this kind of cases."
Brent Beckley faced a maximum sentence of 30 years, but given his cooperation, saw the time being reduced to 14 months. After John Campos (sentenced to 3 months in prison), this is the second defendant of the Black Friday process to be sentenced to prison by Judge Lewis Kaplan.
Even though this process is over, the players that have money blocked in Absolute Poker will have to wait to get it back, since the DoJ still haven’t pronounce itself on this particular case.
