Cabbie receives $10k reward after returning $300k

30 December 2025

A story to end 2013 in a high note: Gerardo Gamboa used to be a simple taxi driver... Now he's a taxi driver that found (and returned) $300,000 in his car's backseat.

After transporting a well-known poker player, Gamboa later realized that his client had forgot a paper bag in the car. Inside he found $300,000, which he promptly returned.

Did Gamboa receive any reward? This was the question many people were asking.

To start with, the poker player gave him a $5 tip; later, after the money incident, Gamboa was awarded $1,000 and a dinner for two, besides being awarded the tile Driver  of the Year by his company, Yellow Checker Star Transportation.

The 28 year old poker professional (who's still to be identified) asked authorities to see Gamboa and shake his hand. Later, he asked for the taxi driver's contact and rewarded him with $10,000.

After receiving his money, Gamboa shared the news with his wife and told the LasVegassun.com that he would take the money to the bank, not having any plans for the future.

Some websites are busy trying to discover who's the anonymous poker player: some have already suggested it might be Justin Bonomo or Ike Haxton. A few players (and, of course, the authorities) know who he is, but the public has been kept in the dark.

Want to know what $300,000 look like? Here it is: all the money Gamboa found, before it was returned.
