It’s been not too long since online gambling become regulated in Spain, a process that definitely did not left anyone indifferent to it since Spain is one of the biggest European online gambling markets ...
It’s also well known that this regulation lead to a migration of professional poker players to countries like UK, Malta and Portugal, in search of homes from which to continue playing in the ".Com" fields.
And it’s precisely Portugal, which is being news in the online world now regarding to its online gambling regulation due to information published in last hours in the national generalist newspaper “O Publico”.
Apparently, the Ministry of Finance is looking to “hide” behind the online gambling regulation, in search of “extra” income to seek urgent liquidity for balancing of annual state budgets as additional measure to face the ongoing crisis in the country. This could precipitate the regulation of online gambling.
Beyond the taxes that would enter the state vaults, it’s estimated that only in the licensing process, the government could enter between 40 and 60 million euros.
The bill is on the desk of Miguel Relvas, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs since January 2012, but did not advance. Recently, he submitted his resignation, which has made the Ministry of Finance reactivate this process.
For now, this is just a news published by a specialized newspaper, but it is true that as the saying goes, "where there's smoke there is fire." We will keep a close eye to our fellow PokerPT and Poker10 to publish any developments in the coming days regarding this topic...
