Polish government wants online gambling monopoly

15 November 2025

The Polish government has submitted to the European Union its online gambling bill proposal (which includes online poker), which will create a state-controlled monopoly.

The current gambling law is from 2008, and this bill seeks to combat "illegal gambling problems in Poland," which are "significant". According to the arguments presented to the European Union, the monopoly is necessary so that the government can control the sector.

Normally the EU is against monopolies, but for now it has allowed Greece to keep its online monopoly with OPAP.

Despite objections to these monopolies from countries like Denmark and England, analysts estimate that the European Commission will not act against monopolies at least until the financial crisis that shakes several EU countries ends.
